I have recently started to have trouble browsing my own website, where it is
housed externally.

The address is www.xyz.com, where the domain on my server is also www.xyz.com.

I assume this is the root of the problem, but don't know how to get round it.

It is likely that there is a hosts file entry or local dns entry that maps
www.xyz.com to localhost or 127.0.0.1 or similar. So when you try to get to
the external www.xyz.com there is no gateway or route to the Internet,
routing stays internal to your LAN.

The private domain on your server should be xyz.com. www should be a dns
pointer at your dns server pointing to the external web site.

Thats why carefully planning your namespace(s) is not an option.
