How can I make a desktop icon that will bring up an educational HTML on my
hard drive using IE?

With IE running the program, I can drag a shortcut from the URL line (once
I finally convince IE to use something that isn't on the internet), but
that calls my primary browser, which is already in use running another
educational HTML on my hard drive.

I need both HTML programs running at the same time, but things work better
if they are in different browsers.

Hi,
You can create a shortcut to open the file in a new Internet Explorer
process.
Find "IExplore.exe" (probably in Program Files\Internet Explorer)
Right-click and drag IExplore.exe to the desktop and choose "Create
shortcut." Right-click that shortcut> Properties> Target, modify the Target
to include the URL.
Example:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"
becomes
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" www.yahoo.com
Note a space between EXE" and ww
Rename the shortcut if desired.

For a file which is on the hard drive/local disk, modify the target to
include the path to the file- example: C:\Documents and Settings\name of
user account\ etc.

Hope this helps,

Thank you very much! That works great.

Is there any way to remove a couple inches of toolbars while this is
running?

Hi,
Remove / hide IE toolbars? Try View> Full Screen or the F11 key.

Thanks, but I definitely need it very much NOT to be full screen. The
reason I need it without tool bars is to shrink it to about 4 inches high
WITH the program running.

Certainly there is but it is difficult to explain how, for more than two
reasons; my memory is not so good plus there is some reduction possible only
if you follow instructions in a KB article or something like that; again, my
memory is fuzzy about details.

There are newsgroups for IE where such things are discussed often and
people's memories will be as sharp as computer memory.

Hi,
I don't know if you can do much more that View> Toolbars [uncheck] Menu Bar
and Status Bar.

That's what I was afraid of. The very stuff I never, ever use can't be

don't want are beside the point.

There's another thing I'd like help with. When I try to set script
options to allow the Javascript part of my programs to run, it seems
impossible to bet IE to accept anything that is not on the internet. That
is it doesn't want to accept file:// HTML's and if you manage to make it
take one it doesn't stick.

Hi,
I may not understand the Javascript issue, but...

You may be encountering the "local machine zone lockdown" feature of [XP]
SP2.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/improvements.mspx

There are three workarounds for this:
1. Rename each .HTM file to .HTA while it's on your hard drive, being
edited. HTA
files aren't as restricted.
2. Give each page the "Mark of the Web"
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms537628.aspx
3. Internet Options> Advanced> Security> check "Allow active content to run
in files on My Computer ."
You will, of course, be giving up some of the enhanced security of the XP
SP2 update.

Is there any way to get it out of it's "obsession" with being on, staying
on and being totally dependent on the internet, per se? (It doesn't help
any to set it to Off Line.)
