I just applied SP4 to my Windows 2000 server. I wanted to run windows update
to see if there were more updates available and browsing the Internet is
near impossible due to how slow the access is. It's not my DSL line, I can
access the websites hosted on the server at normal speeds, there are ZERO
errors in event viewer. I tried going to several other webistes from the
server and it is extremely slow. Ayyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Derek

Happens on W2K wkstn too...
I and others have had it.

Reverted back to SP2, problem solved.

For some of us, SP4 is broken. Will wait for
SP5 and hope this problem gets fixed.

Thanks! Does anyone know if MS has a fix for this? SP4 fixed some of my
other issues and I really do not want to revert.

Nope.

No answer to my (many) previous posts.

Since it only affects a small # of users, it'll
likely never get fixed.

I also have this problem...

Is there any commonality is who is or is not affected?
i.e.: Hardware, Software, BIOS, Chipset, etc...

I am running this on a Dell PowerEdge 2500 Server, newest Bios, 2gig ram,
basic Raid config, nothing really fancy.

What network card are you using? Maybe we can all find something in common
and get it resolved.

Linksys LNE10/100TX ver 4.1.

It's likely not a network issue, something seems to be getting (near)
deadlocked
in the OS...there's NO network activity at all when this happens.

Next time it happens to you, open up Task Manager-you'll see NO
excessive CPU usage, NO excessive memory/paging usage,
NO unknown processes running or taking more CPU than normal.

Something in the GUI is misbehaving, but not leaving any clues.
It affects ALL GUI/menu items after it happens, NOT just those in IE.
Popups take ~15sec., dropdowns, etc, same when before things
were instantaneous. It's like you're already running an app that runs the
CPU up to 100% (say, video encoding) and then try to run something
else. The entire system has slowed to a crawl. Running either IE 5.5
SP2 or IE6 SP1 did not make any difference.

Nothing in Event Viewer.

And, the system will work fine for some random amt. of time BEFORE
these symptoms kick in.

Logging in/out will NOT clear it, only a full restart will.

Backing down to SP2 totally clears it up.

ok, you are having a much more severe problem than me. I just have issues
browsing the Internet. Everything else on my system stays normal and fast.

Fix for slow browsing? There is an issue with NON-default TCPIP settings
that can cause this. Do a search in this NG for SP4 and Slow network
fix. This was a couple months ago now.

My problem is resolved. I had to pay MS for the fix to my slow Internet
Access after SP4.
