I am in desperate need of assistance, I have tried
numerous avenues and I still have not resolved my problem.
I am not a computer person so please excuse my description
on my problem. What is happening is when I access a
website that has a place should have an list of items to
select from I get a box with a red "X" inside. In some
cases, I only get a heading with nothing else showing.
When I contacted my internet provider they said it was my
browser. Any suggestions on what my problem is? I am
taking online college courses and really need to be able
to read the discussions and take the tests...

when I access a website that has a place should have an list of items
to select from I get a box with a red "X" inside.

Red-X means that there was a resource that IE thought it could access
but wasn't successful at loading. If it also represents a dialog chances are
that the site has something implemented in Macromedia Flash and that
your version is not compatible with the version being displayed.
If you didn't have that capability at all I don't think you would be seeing
a Red-X.

It is possible that you would see a link confirming this guess if you
temporarily changed your Security settings to Prompt and replied
No to each prompt. E.g. if IE didn't even try to display that type of file
you might instead see a page which told you that "This site requires..."
and then provide you with a link for updating whatever it is that it requires.

The simplest way to access the Security settings is to doubleclick
on the security zone icon in the Status bar (e.g the Globe at the bottom
of the page when the page which you are in is in the Internet zone).
Rather than try to figure out which setting to change to a prompt
change them all, e.g. press P and space all the way down.
When you are done testing click on the Default level button
(which becomes enabled once you save your changes).

I am making a lot of assumptions here so if these guesses are incorrect
you will have to provide details to let us understand why they are incorrect.
E.g. at the very least try right-clicking on the Red-X and see if there are
some clues from the URL that the Properties command displays.
Similar, more reliable, details can be obtained by using View Source
and trying to match up the Red-X with the source but that is admittedly
harder for a novice to do.

You can undoubtedly find better help from the operators of the site
especially if that is from the institution that is offering your course.
E.g. there might even be a 1-800 number listed somewhere on one
of the site's help pages.

Good luck
