I'm looking for a browser not IE based. The obvious answer is FireFox, but
after installing it when I start it, my firewall reports all the times at
least two requests to connect to two IP adresses, even if I selected the
blank page as start page. The last version of K-Meleon doesn't start ( none
was able to explain to me these oddities in newsgroups dedicated to
browsers). So, are there other (free) browsers not IE based?
Thanks.

The kmeleon forum can help you with that browser.

That'll be the update check for the browser and installed
extensions....

I unchecked the automatic update.

I really like K-Meleon (it's now my default browser), and one of the
best things about it is the helpfulness of the forum.

(It's also great that while they really like the browser, they're not
fanatics about thinggs -- a guiding principle in there is "my browser
is not my religion", which I really like.)

I installed again version 0.8 and it works fine. Sorry, no help for my
problem concerning version 0.9 from the K-Meleon forum.
Regards.

As I say in another reply, I installed again K-Meleon vers. 0.8 (vers. 0.9
doesn't run on my system -WinXPPro SP1- without any clear reason -no help
for this in forums), but I also use IE6.
As to FireFox, I unchecked the update at startup without any stop of the
initial requests to connect of the browser; I don't know how to remove the
default RSS feeds.
Thank you.

Sorry to hear that; 0.9 is turning out to be quite good, IMO.

It's very weird that you can run 0.8 and not 0.9 -- are you sure your
copy of the 0.9 installer isn't corrupted or something? (I ask only
because I had no problem at all with that upgrade: I uninstalled 0.8
entirely, after saving my profile and skins, then installed 0.9 into
the same-named directory, and re-copied my profile and skins. Even the
old shortcuts to the program still pointed to the right place.)

(What was title of the thread in the K-M forum where you raised the
problem? I'd be happy to take a look and see if I can figure anything
out.)

What does it have over Firefox?

Non-XUL front end; incredibly configurable by using simple macros
(with almost all settings in editable text files); and like Mike says,
fast, and with a small footprint.

A bit geeky, without question -- but hey; some of us like that!

(There's also a notable lack of rabidly fanatical "my browser's good
and everything else sucks" type of boosterism. Geez, I hate that: it
bugged me a lot when I used to use Opera , and there's a bit too much
of it in FF circles these days for my taste. Horses and courses
thing.)

I agree with you that that kind of boosterism is annoying, but I don't
agree with you that there's a noticeable lack of it with K-Meleon
users. I think it's just on a smaller scale because the user base is
smaller.

Oh, I agree: if it got as big as FF and Opera, it'd undoubtedly
attract that sort of stuff.

But I still think -- precisely beccause it's a smaller user base, and
existing users can effectively stomp on it when they see it -- it's
noticeably lacking in there in comparison to the other, larger user
groups.

FWIW, the counter-fight exists in the in FF forums, but it's less
successful because of the scale of user base that FF has decided to go
for.
