browser wont search from address bar

I have win98 ie6, I removed internet optimiser trojan
horse lately. when i search by typing a word in the
address bar i just get an error message, and my query
changes. E.G. I type bbc and the query changes to
http://bbc/ but then i just get page not found.
 
Some program (usually spyware\parasite) may have overridden the URL prefix
setting?
