Here is the story. I was having problems with pop-ups and
tried several freeware programs, none of which helped. I
also tried some spyware to see if there was something amiss
only to find the spyware had worse pop-ups than the ads
themselves, so, I uninstalled them. Once this was done I
could not close IE6. I reverted back to prior versions (IE
5.5) and ran the program to have it repair itself and the
browser still could not close. I then tried downloading a
new version IE6 and installing it, and the problem still
exists. When IE is open you can not close it. Using Task
Manager it takes 2 attempts to close IE before you get a
message that the software is either busy or not responding
and only then can the task be ended. I tried using Windows
Update, which I had been using and this no longer worked
either. The software for update got hung up. I next tried
downloading Netscape 7.1, and this is working fine.
Although I am perfectly satisfied with Netscape, I would
prefer all the software on my PC was working right. Does
anyone have any ideas? I can't seem to find a way to ask
Microsoft without being thrown all over the place, but
think they would be interested in the problem. After all,
the solution appears to be going to Netscape.
