Browser Update Problem

Hi,

Whenever my browser updates a site, such as the NY Times (every ten minutes)
it knocks me back to that site.....even though I'm working or viewing
another window. It just takes over. It doesn't close other windows, it just
puts the updated site up for view. This gets kind of annoying. Is there any
setting to prevent this?

Hi,
If that site is minimized to the taskbar, it should stay minimized. Are you
minimizing it or just keeping it behind other IE windows?

Don

It's just behind the other windows

Try minimizing other windows to the taskbar. This behavior has been around
for a long time and that's the only reliable solution I've run across.

It depends on what "this" is implemented by.
One possibility is it's META Refresh.
There's an option in the Miscellaneous section
of the Security tab which can disable that.
Note however, that that would be a global setting
and it would affect all other sites' uses of that feature
(e.g. many use it to implement an initial redirect;
redriving ads is only one use of it.)
In that case you would have to be prepared to use
View Source and construct redirect URLs yourself
to simulate use of the feature.

Scripting could be another reason for the behaviour.
Disabling it could also be done globally with a security
option but overall would probably be more of an inconvenience
than just putting up with the occasional refesh from an
obnoxious site.

The most reliable method of controlling such behaviour
is simply to close the window when you are done with it
and then reopen it again later if you need to. The History
bar's View By Order Visited Today is helpful for doing that.
Another method which requires having an open window
for reshowing the page is to load something less disruptive
on top of it (such as About:Blank) and then when you are
ready to return to it just press Back.

Etc.
