Help,
I've been experiencing 2 problems with my IE6 browser which may or may
not be related. I'm running IE6 on XP Home platform with a 1.8 Ghz
processor

The first is that no matter how many times I set my hope page to Google
every time I restart my browser it goes to Search-Space.

The second, and more serious, is that now my browser will not start. It
will connect to the internet but then I get the message that it has
encountered a problem and is going to close. I've tried restoring to
earlier times and have also done a safe reinstall but with no luck. One
other thing which may or may not be related is that the Windows XP Search
function no longer works either.

I only have a manufacturers restore disk not the original XP Home disk.

Short of reinstalling with a quick format is there anything else I can do?

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Hi
can't go to that page because my browser doesn't work! Am already
running Spybot and am experiencing problems with that in certain views.
Also windows explorer is manifesting the same problems in certain
circumstances as is control panel. Have run my Virus checker, after
updating, and it did find a worm - Poz, I think - but it cured that.
(Thischeck was after my problems started).

When did you last update SpyBot S & D?
SpyBot S & D doesn't catch everything.

Hi
I updated Spybot 2 days before I noticed the problems.

Am now experiencing problems with Word as well and If I click on a hyperlink
in an e-mail everything freezes until I close down OE with Task Manager.
Oddly enough this is the effect of trying to use Windows XP Search too.

As I said, SpyBot S & D won't catch everything.
Go back to http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm and try Ad-Aware and
HijackThis.

Hi,
as I said I can't go to your link because a)My browser doesn't work and b)
when I click on a Hyperlink the computer freezes.

However, I managed to update Spybot again and ran the program and it
identified the problem "home page" which I asked it to fix and it said that
it had. I've just looked and it's still "Search-Space" not Google.

--> Click on MANAGE AD-ONS ( From here you have to disable all the
UNPUBLISHED ITEMS .... Applicable for if SP2 is installed).

That is not a fix. That is a diagnostic (similar to unchecking
Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)
or using tools such as BHODemon.

If those things stop a problem symptom it means that you have
hidden the cause of the problem. It is a strong indication that
your system is infested with hidden undesirable software modules
(aka malware, spyware, etc.); so you should then do some serious
scanning (e.g. using tools such as AdAware, SpybotSD, etc.)
to try to discover the extent of the problem and hopefully correct it too.
