We have a Windows 2000 domain and our workstations have Internet Explorer
6.0 installed. We are having problems when websites are posting updates
(ActiveX controls, etc), and the browser prompts the user to install it in
order to run the website correctly. This is happening quite often,
especially websites that users use to conduct business transactions. All of
our users are part of the 'USERS' group on their workstations, and we do not
want to give them 'POWER USERS' authority. We do want to allow them to
install these updates in order for the websites to work correctly. Is there
any way we can do this?

Thanks

Are you sure this isn't just an issue of IE security levels/settings? Try
lowering the security setting and see if that helps. If so, you may not need
to grant users any new privledges.

So if I lower the browser security, the users will be able to install the
ActiveX controls without us having to make them a Power User or
Administrator?

I can't say for sure -- it depends on the particular application. However,
you're probably better off lowering security for one or two sites rather
than elevating users' privledges, if you can get that to work. You should
try lowering the security level and testing it as a user. If it works,
great! If it doesn't, you'll have to investigate another solution.
