I've been experiencing alot of BSODs recently, and a few days ago, after
suffering one, Firefox would no longer hold onto my saved passwords or
cookies. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling without success, so I switched
back to IE6, and although it worked at first, I got a bluescreen again, and
now the same thing is happening to IE.
Also, when I click on the arrow of the address bar, none of the sites I have
visited before are listed.

Does anyone know what is causing this problem, and how I can fix it?

TIA,
Newsscanner.

Hi News,
The BSODs may the result of many causes from bad memory cards on your
computer to an infection with malwares/Viruses, badly written Applications
installed on your computer to a Hardware Failure .
scan forst for malwares and viruses with an up2date software if you have if
not go here scan online or download tools to scan your system:
here:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com
http://www.sophos.com
http://www.nasstec.co.uk/tools.html

For Anti-Adware go here:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ ; for SE lavasoft for personal use
http://www.safer-networking.org/ ; for S&D spybot

Then uninstall Firefox and be sure your system is working okay and you don't
have BSODs any more, then reinstall Firefox if you want ot use it.
Look in the event viewer for any Error messages with Red Pluses beside them
and post them back here if any.
HTH
Pleae let us know your findings.
Regards,
nass

Thanks Nass,
Done all of that.
But still the real issue remains, i.e. that my browser does not remember any
settings, autocomplete, passwords, logins, my history just shows the sites I
have been to in that particular surfing session, the same for the address
bar, it only shows the sites I have visited in that particular session.
After a reboot or after having switched off the PC and then switching it on
again, everything is gone again and nothing os remembered by the browser.
This is driving me mad.
Please, please, what can I do to correct this???
TIA,
Newsscanner.

Okay news, On the IE properties click on the General Tab and see if your
History settings for keeping the history is set say for 30 days (you can make
more i.e. 60 days) then click on the Advanced Tab and scroll down under
Secuirty Option;
and uncheck this Box if been ticked:
[ ] Empty the Temporary Files and folder on when browser is closed.
uncheck this Box.

Click on Content Tab, click on Autocomplete Button and on the pop up window
select or check the boxex for :
Use Autocoplete for
[ ] Web Addresses
[ ] Forms
[ ] User names and passwords on forms
[ ] prompt me to save passwords
Click OK to confirm your changes and quit the window.
On the IE window click on Apply then OK and Quit the IE Properties window
and Reboot your machine.
See if you can produce the problem again and if it is gone or still can't
remember any of the addresses you typed in.
HTH
Please let us know.
Regards,
nass

Thanks again nass,
All the settings were as they should be (i.e. just like you recommended I
should set them if they weren't).
Unfortunately it still made no difference, IE6 still does not remember
anything, and my cookie folder seems to be empty all the time too (or at
least practically empty).
Could it have something to do with the fact that I used CCleaner recently?
Thanks,
Newsscanner.

Hi News,
As Ccleaner usefull can be a pain in the neck sometimes if you delete the
wrong File/Folder, you may deleted your History Folder while you trying to
clear your History thinking that deleting the History file will delete the
History not the Folder!.
Do the Following and see if you have the Folder in your Directory tree:
Open the windows Explorer and Open/Expand the [-] Local Disk(C:)
[ -]Documents and Settings
[+] All Users
expand like this [ -] Default user
[+]Application Data
- Cookies
- Desktop
- Favorites
[-] Local Settings
-Application Data
[-] History
-History.IE5 or (IE6) this should
have Index Dat file size 16 KB, you can copy it from another machine have
the same OS as your's
-Temp
[-] Temorary Internet Files
[-] Content.IE5 (IE6)
-JRes
- WEXRZ
and have also the Index file
in it you will see in the Right Pane.

The same apply with other users for ex:
[+] Nass
[+] Application Data
-Cookies
-Desktop
[+] Favorites
[-] Local Settings
[+] Application Data
[+] History
[+] Temp
-Temporary Internet Files

If these files/folders not there try to create it and put it in the Right
Path for IE to be able to read and store your History sessions.

= Open IE properties Window and on General tab click Settings under the
Option Temporary Internet Files.
On the Settings Window under the option:
Temporary Internet files folder;
Drag the selector to the right to set the Disk space between 50-80 MB for IE
to use for Temp Internet files.
Click OK to confirm your Settings and Reboot your Machine.

Hi again,
Tried all that.
I created the folders and copied the index files in them from the laptop,
now there are a number of files in my Temporary Internet folder and my
History folder (the ones under My name in "Documents and Settings") but it
seems the problem still remains and everything is forgotten after e reboot.
I really don't know what to do further now.
Thanks for all your help so far.

I don't know the answer but don't use Beta 7. You won't be able to use IE any
more and the windows explorer search function won't work until you reinstall
some .dll files that the beta release erases. Not only that, but Microsoft
won't help you until you give them all kinds of information that is not
pertinent to the problem. Opera and Firefox are better anyway and now they
are both free!

Unfortunately it still made no difference, IE6 still does not remember
anything, and my cookie folder seems to be empty all the time too (or at
least practically empty).
Could it have something to do with the fact that I used CCleaner recently?
Thanks,
Newsscanner.

Okay news, On the IE properties click on the General Tab and see if your
History settings for keeping the history is set say for 30 days (you can make
more i.e. 60 days) then click on the Advanced Tab and scroll down under
Secuirty Option;
and uncheck this Box if been ticked:

Hi News,
As Ccleaner usefull can be a pain in the neck sometimes if you delete the
wrong File/Folder, you may deleted your History Folder while you trying to
clear your History thinking that deleting the History file will delete the
History not the Folder!.
Do the Following and see if you have the Folder in your Directory tree:
Open the windows Explorer and Open/Expand the [-] Local Disk(C:)
[ -]Documents and Settings
[+] All Users
expand like this [ -] Default user
[+]Application Data
- Cookies
- Desktop
- Favorites
[-] Local Settings
-Application Data
[-] History
-History.IE5 or (IE6) this should
have Index Dat file size 16 KB, you can copy it from another machine have
the same OS as your's
-Temp
[-] Temorary Internet Files
[-] Content.IE5 (IE6)
-JRes
- WEXRZ
and have also the Index file
in it you will see in the Right Pane.

The same apply with other users for ex:
[+] Nass
[+] Application Data
-Cookies
-Desktop
[+] Favorites
[-] Local Settings
[+] Application Data
[+] History
[+] Temp
-Temporary Internet Files

If these files/folders not there try to create it and put it in the Right
Path for IE to be able to read and store your History sessions.

= Open IE properties Window and on General tab click Settings under the
Option Temporary Internet Files.
On the Settings Window under the option:
Temporary Internet files folder;
Drag the selector to the right to set the Disk space between 50-80 MB for IE
to use for Temp Internet files.
Click OK to confirm your Settings and Reboot your Machine.

Please write back with your findings.

Hi News,
Did you point the Settings on the IE properties for the Temp to the right
path (i.e when you said you created Temp and History folders, if you go to
the IE properties and click on Settings under General Tab and on settings
Window under the option:
Temporary Internet files folder.
Current location: C:\Documents and settings\Nass\Local Settings\Temorary
Internet Files\
Or you can creat another Temp file/Folder and place in this Path
C:\Documents and settings\Nass\Local Settings\Temorary Internet Files01 and
then delete the Old one from the previous Path C:\Documents and
settings\Nass\Local Settings\Temorary Internet Files.

Try to Run the Command RUN command and type :
sfc /scannow Press OK and get your XP CD handy to insert it when
needed.

If no joy try the following:
To repair IE go to Start >> Control Panel >>Add or Remove programs>>
Change or Remove Progrmas and locate the IE and on Change/Remove select
Repair IE.

HTH
Please let us know.
