Hi. I am new here - greetings to all. For some months I
have noticed that my IE browser links DIRECTLY to my
desktop! I have been having a HIGH incidence of hacking,
both internal and external, and I can't seem to stop
these #@%#$ from getting into my computer. Software has
been installed on my hard drive seemingly, and I have
found numerous .exe prorams that are highly suspect, some
only created in May of this year - NOT BY ME!!! I do not
kmow how to create these type of programs: one, in
particular comes to mind: Prefetch.exe. Does anyone know
what this program is? I believe it accesses my outgoing
programs and 'fetches' copies of everything done on the
internet. However, the most disturbing matter is that
links to every icon on my desktop are displayed in my IE
browser, and that this is how the hackers are getting in.

Can anyone please help me with this? What should I do to
remove those links, and should I delete all Prefetch
files on my hard drive? I notice that there is a new
Prefetch file created every day that I use my computer,
especially when online. I need help FAST!!!

Any and all comments and suggestions are welcome, and
thank you in advance for your help.

Can you explain what you mean by "links to every icon on my desktop are
displayed in my IE browser,"? If you mean that YOU can display a directory
of your desktop from IE running on your system then it is not a threat. Just
typing "C:\" (without the quotes) into IE's address box and pressing the
Enter key will allow you to see the directory of the C: drive and then
clicking on any of the subdirectories displayed will take you to them --
this all means nothing as it is local -- and if you have taken even the
minimum of security precautions then nobody outside can access anything. How
is it that you are testing these supposed links and how are you testing to
see if these supposed hackers can make use of them?

Do you have a firewall installed?
What is your Windows version?
If you are using WinXP set your connection to use WinSP's firwall on the
Advanced tab of the connection's Properties.

Are you using an anti-virus?

Get and run these programs (if you test after each one you can stop when
the problem is gone):
Ad-Aware:
