there are sites that i will go to and seemingly for no
reason I will get a message that the browser needs to
shut down because it has encountered a problem. Any ideas

I am having the same problem and it seems to be happening
more and more frequently. it would seem that at least once
an hour, i get "internet explorer has encountered an error
and needs to close"

Same here.
Real odd part is that somehow my home page was changed to
a new search engine. The any search on Google or Yahoo
gets the browser problem. Any note to online support gets
me the same message consistently, every time. be nice to
know what is happening.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Try running Ad-aware, a Spyware scanner, many posts recently from IE closing
unexpectedly have been attributed to this.

hi Mike
same problem - specifically on Windows Update; Google;
and Mcafee update; plus others at random.
Let me know if you get any useful answers! HP suggested
there is a conflict between IE6 and something in my
system; and that I should either reinstall system (!) or
go back to IE5 - which Microsoft should be able to advise
on, but HP couldn't.
Neither option is very attractive. Any other ideas
welcome!
