browser fails ping does not

Hello: I posted the following to another newsgroup, but have had no
responses so far. Any knowledgeable advice would be a big help:

After approximately 1 or 2 days, my browsers stop working. They give
an immediate "page not found." This is true for both IE and Firefox.
Other network programs like ping or emule are still running flawlessly.

A reboot brings the browsers back to full function right away.

When the browsers are not working, I am able to ipconfig /release and
ipconfig /renew and these seem to work fine.

However, I cannot even reach the direct IP address of my router. It is

an immediate "page not found" again.

I am running XP with Service Pack 1 and all updates except for Service
Pack 2. I recently installed the .net framework because another
program needed it.

OK, I ran spybot. Found nothing but a bunch of cookies. I ran Hijack
This. There are no browser hijackers, everything it lists looks fine.

I looked at my list of protocols under msinfo32. I have NetWare SPX
and IPX protocols (I am not sure exactly why I have these) so the total

number of protocols should be 17. The total number was 14. I ran the
XP Winsock Repair utility and now hte total number of protocols in 17,
15 of which start with MSAFD. So it seems OK.

However, this morning I needed to reboot once again, after the Winsock
repair only about 40 hours ago.

I am really tired of guessing here. Are there any network diagnostics,

perhaps even somewhere in the performance monitor, that will show me
exactly what is broken in my network when this situation occurs?

I really feel like the first step is actually figuring out what is
breaking and then it should be obvious to see how it can be fixed. Any

help would be greatly appreciated. This is turning into a real
annoyance.

Hi :-)

You don't tell us the version of Windows you are using, which really is a
must when asking for help in the newsgroups, nor what kind of connection you
have, DSL, Dial-up, Cable, etc.

First..

Did you post the Highjack this log to a HighJackThis forum for expert
analysis? If so, please post the link to that log here so that we can
review the experts results. If not, please post the log to the AumHa

Second......look at the settings for your computer see where this may be
happening.

Do you need to use a proxy? If not, check your proxy settings and be sure
nothing is checked there.
Disable Proxy Settings
Tools>Internet Options> Connections tab> LAN Settings button
Under Proxy server, make sure the box there is unchecked

Also. be sure that you have it set up as a Local Area Connection that is
always on. Do it from the New Connection Wizard in Control Panel and as you
step through it select the 'always on' option. Once done verify that it
works and disable the other one.

Also, check the following settings:

Click Tools>Internet Explorer>Connection>Settings>Advanced...see if it is
set to disconnect. If so, uncheck it.

You might also check the information here:
Keep Your Isp Connection Live
http://www.aumha.org/a/refresh.htm

and....

Start>Settings> Control Panel>Network and Dial-up Connections>Local Area
Connection>Properties>Configure>Power Management tab>uncheck Allow the
computer to turn off this device to save power.

also..

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for your response.

I use Windows XP home edition and DSL and no proxy.

I will go through you suggestions and if I still cannot resolve it, I
will
take your suggestion and register for AumHa website. So far, I have
been
the only one to look at the Hijack This log.
