Hi,

I just uninstalled the bundled McAfee Internet Security
Suite that came with a Dell computer running XP Home.
Now none of my other programs can access the internet
although with my browser still has a live connection.
Specifically programs that rely on my browser http, ftp,
etc settings such as Outlook Express, Symantec Live
Update, Windows Media Player, MusicMatch Juke box.
I've tried deleting and reconfiguring my default
connection a number of times but the setting don't seem
to work for the othe programs, only the browser.

My connection is a Comcast cable modem through a Netgear
802.11G router. All other clients on the local subnet are
not affected and this problem is limited to a single
local machine where I uninstalled McAfee. Biggest problem
is Outlook Express as I can't get email on this machine.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds as if part of McAfee may not have uninstalled, or maybe something
else got mad when you uninstalled it. Open up "msinfo32", expand
Components, Networking and click on Protocol. Scroll through the list (it
may be long) and see if any of the Names listed there start with anything
besides MSAFD or RSVP. Names that contain XXXX over MSAFD" or "XXXX over
RSVP" could be bad and any Names that mention McAfee are suspect since you
have uninstalled it.

If you see any names that mention McAfee, try reinstalling the Internet
Security Suite and uninstalling it again. Maybe something didn't go quite
right the first time through and it didn't finish all the way. Reboot after
you uninstall again, and see if your internet access is working. If it is
still broken, check to see if you still see the McAfee entries in msinfo32,
as above.

If you don't see anything that mentions McAfee, but there are other items in
there that may be bad, select all of the text in the protocol window (click
in the pane with the results, then go to the Edit menu and pick Select All),
and paste it into notepad, and bring it back to your other computer to
include in a reply to this message.
