browser automatically connects to other webpages!!!!!!!!!

windows xp, service pack 2
ok this is getting on my nerves.  when i surf the net, the location bar on
the bottom of my browser says its trying to connect to a ton of webpages.
the browser doesnt actually go there but it just says its connect and
sending data.  ive run spybot s&d and online virus scanners.  says it
cleaned up everything but IT STILL DOES IT!!!!!!!!!
oh and i use firefox 1.0.
PLEAE HELP!!!!!!!!!
