I'm trying to browse a directory that is on a domain. How can I do this
without authenticating to the domain?

You probably can't unless you have credentials on the target computer though
you should be able to see computers and shares in the network via my Network
Places if netbios over tcp/ip is enabled and your computer is on a network
with proper connectivity. --- Steve

tried that and it didn't help. I cannot browse any servers though.
I thought you could browse for any shared directories?

btw, if I type the share name in unc path on start>run, I get a username/pwd
prompt.

Possibly the ports used for network browsing such as port 138 UDP are being
blocked to your computer. Also NBT can rely heavily on broadcasts which
normally do not go past a router. It would be normal to get a credential
prompt if you specify a unc path and have access to the target computer for
file and print sharing such as port139/445 TCP if you have proper name
resolution via NBT or dns. --- Steve
