Browse 4 Missing File Problem

Browse for missing file doesn't like avi files that have
been copied to CD (DVD+RW; CD Direct), even after they
have be copied back to the hard disk in different location.

Archived some video footage files to CD (DVD+RW; CD
Direct) and then copied them back to the hard disk, but in
a different location. Also moved the originals so mm
couldn't find them.

When I open project that uses this file and do the browse
for missing files it says the selected file doesn't
closely enough match the original.

However I did a file compare (COMP) against the original
(still saved on hd in diff local) and they are supposedly
the same. If I move the one copied back from the CD to
the original location the project finds and uses it just
fine. Or if I browse for the original, which is also in a
different locaton, that works fine.

Kind of an hard scenario to explain but how's that for
strange?

But can you do with them what I can't? i.e. restore video
source file from CD (DVD+RW; CD Direct) to different
location and succefully load back in to Movie Maker
project with browse for missing file.

Ben,

I just made a project from two source files, one a WMV and the other a
DV-AVI.

Then burned the source files to a CD-R. Opened the project and resolved the
red-Xs by pointing MM2 to the CD drive. It resolved all the red-Xs in the
collection and the project at the same time.

Then copied the two files from the CD to another computer on my home network
(my laptop doesn't have two drives so I can't move it to a different one
there). I also renamed the two files to give MM2 something more to think
about in addition to the location change.

Removed the disc and opened the project in MM2.

Because of doing both a location and name change at the same time, I had to
point each of the 4 clips (2 in the collection and 2 in the project) to the
new name/location.... but the re-association worked fine.... and the two
renamed source files work fine as source files in the original movie
project.

I can use files on a CD or even after restoring them to
the hard disk from a CD, so long as I don't need to use
browse for missing file to load them.

-Importing works fine.

-Project opens and works fine if restored to original
location.

-Browse for missing file works with the original source
file that has not been backed-up & restored to/from CD
(DVD+RW; CD Direct). Even if file name and location has
changed, thus the need to use browse for missing file.

-Browse for missing file does not work with source file
that had been backed-up & restored to/from CD (DVD+RW; CD
Direct). However, if the backed-up source file is
restored to the original location project opens and uses
it just fine.

So any ideas on what might be causing it not to work for
me?

As is mentioned earlier a file compare (COMP) doesn't
report any difference between the none backed-up file and
the restored file. So what is Movie Maker keying off of
that makes it think it's too different to use
as "replacement".

Ben,

I don't know, but it might be an underlying setting or issue with XP or your
system instead of a Movie Maker issue.... it's much more forgiving with
changes in picture files. Maybe test it a bit with pictures and music files
in addition to video clips, and get some more clues about what works or
doesn't.
