I have a brother MFC7550 connected to a print server on
my local LAN. I set up IP ports successfully.
It is working file with my desktop. I had to connet the
dektop diretly via the paralell port in order for the
right driver to load from the built in XP list. It ended
up with the MFC6550/MFC7550 driver. Works great there.
I just got a laptop, but it does not have a paralell
port. When I try to set up the driver to the IP port, I
get every other Brother printer on the list, except the
MFC7550. I see it in the list in the NTPRINT.inf file,
but it will not show in the printer setup pull-down list
for Brother printers. The closest I see there is the
MFC6000, which works only for simple printing. Is there
a way that I can get the right driver setup manually?

I had the same problem installing my MFC4550 drivers on my laptop (no
parallel port). Here's what finally worked for me: Save a copy of NTPrint.inf
somewhere handy and open it in notepad. Find your printer in the [Brother]
list. In the third column, the entry begins with ",LPTENUM\". Delete
"LPTENUM\", leaving the initial comma and everything after the backslash.
Manually install the printer, but when you get to the driver selection
screen, click "Have Disk" and select the modified copy of NTPrint.inf. It'll
say the drivers aren't digitally signed, but that's just because you've
modified the file. You should now be able to select your printer from the
list and install with no problems.

I hope this helps. I couldn't find anywhere that gave me a better idea.
