Is it really that bad at printing and scanning?
I have seen several user reviews, some say it's the dog's, others say it's a
dog (slow scanning, poor prints with banding, copying doesn't work with all
zoom settings, etc).

I had a Brother MFC3420. As an office user I was happy with it. The colors it
printed were a bit pale, but since I wasn't doing photos anyhow it didn't matter.

What upset about it though was that I had it a relatively short time (a year
maybe?) when the color print head died. With a straight face they wanted more
to replace the head (which easily snapped out) than to sell me a new printer.

At that point I decided to only buy ink-jets where the heads are attached to the
cartridge, not ones that are permanently mounted in the printer.

YMMV...

Brother had a terrible run with printheads for a while, the design was at best
questionable. I believe they have fixed it now. But for anybody who gets a
printhead failure with a Brother inkjet be aware that they will probably
replace the printhead under warranty if the printer is 18-24 months old. They
do not advertise this, and I believe that this would be a recall situation in
some other industries but give it a go if you have the problem. The failure is
often but not always accompanied by a "Machine Error 41" message on
multifunction Brother printers. Google for "Brother Error 41" for much more
information.

All I can say is that their repair shop kept that little tidbit to themselves.
They saved themselves $20 or whatever and lost a customer for life.

Serves them right of course, shame that corporations sometimes get lost in
"process" and lose sight of customer satisfaction and the profits that will
bring them in time.
Hopefully you have a better printer now.
