It's really, really loud. Not in standby or even during operation, but
for a total of about 5 seconds before printing a page this thing fills
the office with a high pitched whining noise, I assume it's warming up
or something. Is it at all possible to stop this nonsense?

It is clearly faulty, this is in no way a noisy printer so something has gone
wrong with it.
My guess, and it is only a guess, is that the laser scanner is failing. Often
they make an awful noise when winding up to speed and the noise can sometimes
not be present when printing. If that is the case you will not be able to fix
it for a reasonable price. It is an entry level laser and the cost of parts is
prohibitive. If the scanner is failing it will get worse until it finally self
destructs. If by chance it is still under warranty get Brother to fix it.
