Hi

Does anyone know if there are any major differences between these two
printers?
I've found out the following, and the HL 5170DN looks like a higher
spec but it costs £150 more than the HL 1870N:

HL 5170DN - £342
=========
- 20 ppm
- 2400 x 600dpi (HQ1200)
- 10/100 Base TX Ethernet
- Duplex printing
- No LCD panel

HL 1870N - £498
========
- 18 ppm
- 2400 x 600 dpi
- 10/100 Base TX Ethernet
- Duplex printing
- LCD panel

TIA

The 5170DN printer is new, only just released this week, the 1870N has been
around for a while and is about to be replaced by the HL-6050DN.

A few things you missed:
5170DN supports Apple Rendezvous connectivity I dont beleive the 1870N
does.
5170DN has a 50 sheet multipurpose tray the 1870N has a 100 sheet tray.
5170DN supports USB 2.0, 1870N USB 1.

The 24ppm HL-6050DN is expected end of January at a price of around
£424+VAT.

The HL-5170DN looks good value against the HL-1870N.

Thanks Peter,

Do you think its worth waiting for the HL-6050DN over the HL-5170DN?

I think the HL-5170DN's 20ppm is fast enough for us, but if there is a
significant advantage in buying a HL-6050DN then please let me know.

TIA

Andrew

Thanks Peter,

Do you think its worth waiting for the HL-6050DN over the HL-5170DN?

I think the HL-5170DN's 20ppm is fast enough for us, but if there is a
significant advantage in buying a HL-6050DN then please let me know.

The HL-6050DN is a beefier printer compared to HL-5170DN, offering more
paper input and higher yield consumables for less user intervention.

HL-6050DN 500 sheet paper tray, HL-5170DN 250 sheet
HL-6050DN 500 sheet 2nd paper tray, HL-5170DN 250 sheet 2nd tray
HL-6050DN 100 sheet multipurpose tray, HL-5170DN 50 sheet
HL-6050DN up to 24ppm, HL-5170DN up to 20ppm

The HL-6050DN may print at up to true 1200x1200dpi (can't confirm this at
the moment) where as the HL-5170DN prints at up to 2400x600dpi which is a
software enhanced resolution.

Also the HL-6050DN uses higher yield consumables compared to the HL-5170DN,
drum yields up to 30,000 pages as apposed to 20,000 and the toner will
print up to 7,500 pages as apposed to 6,700.

The HL-6050DN is on brothers web site but with no proper specs yet:
