Brother HL-1850 stopped printing multiple pages per sheet

One of the cool features of my 1850 is that I can, in addition to
printing duplex, print multiple pages per sheet. So, I can easily
turn an 8 page doc into a single page, front and back. However,
about 6 months ago, the ability to do this stopped. I can still go in
and select the option to do this, but the multiple page stuff doesn't
work anymore. I asked Brother and they didn't seem to have a clue.
Anybody know what I can try or do to get this feature back? I
really like saving paper and my eyesight isn't gone, yet, so I
actually enjoy reading the smaller print.

Thanks in advance.

Matt

I see this printer has both PCL and PostScript emulation. Scaling
pages is a common feature of PS. Are you using it in that mode? If
not, do. Otherwise I think if you download the Adobe PS driver from
their site you can do this with any PS printer.

A different method is to use the Fineprint.com virtual printer.
<http://www.fineprint.com/> which works with just about any printer.

Sorry. This should be a follow up to the original post but I don't
have it on my server.

The engineering talent at Brother seems to be limited to hardware. I
had several problems with the Brother PCL driver all of which were
solved by installing the printer as a Laserjet 2300 Series PCL 5e. You
can download the drivers from www.hp.com. Perhaps the hardware
engineers are not so talented; the Laserjet 2300 PCL 6 drivers did not
work. If you insist on a Brother driver I have found that the HL-6050D
drivers seem to work better than those for our HL-1850.

Thanks for that. I have to run my HL-1850 as a Laser Jet 4 to get it to
print labels!

Incidentally, I have just reconfigured our little network and also have
problems.

My Computer is a Win98SE and when the Brother was run off a Win 95
across an Ethernet, it would print everything just fine.

Now I have moved it onto a Win XP Home, and I can only get two pages of
Duplex printed, or a label run of 24 sheets, then it hangs. Any idea
why?

I thought that moving it to a faster machine would enable longer runs.
(Spooling enabled and all the things that should make sense are OK!!)

Ta,

Mike

Thanks to everybody who responded. I installed Fineprint and it
works incredibly well. Better than what was working before. My only
problem is that in order to be legit, I'll need to pay for it, so I'll
also try the 2300 Series as described above.

By the way this is the printer that comes with an optional network
card in it so I don't need to worry about the last issue that was
described above.

Thanks again. I don't know why I waited so long to ask the question.

Umm, perhaps I'll have to add a card. ;-(

Please let us know if the 2300 drivers work.

Sorry Mike I don't have a clue. I use a broadband router (SMC
Barricade 7004BR) as a network print server and the connected Windows
XP Professional and Windows 98SE computers work as expected. I would
definitely recommend an upgrade from an LJ4 driver to the HP 2300 PCL
5e driver. The latter has all the facilities that come with the
Brother HL-1850 PCL driver and a superior user interface. Have you
tried using the parallel interface if you are using USB or vice versa?

Oh! That's a good idea. I was using it on parallel (as that worked with
win95), I'll try usb.

Thanks

Replying to self:-
Amazingly, I just printed a batch of labels from XP directly to the
HL-1850 (parallel port) using the Brother driver. The labels printed
perfectly!

So I am left with this peculiar situation, printing from win98SE using
Brother driver across to the XP then to the printer strips out CRs (LFs
are OK, but the CR are not recognised).

That seems to me amazing!

The network driver on the Win 98SE m/c is Realtec RTL8139 PCI Fast
Ethernet NIC. I must look for updates!
