Broken shortcuts don't search for target

In the past, if I clicked a broken shortcut then XP would show a small
window with a torch icon as it searched for the target.

I don't have that any more. How can I get it back?

What do you have instead of the searching flashlight?

I get a 'Windows Explorer' message which says:

The path "C:\ XXXXXX" does not exist or is not a directory.
