Broadcast email using "catagories"

Is there a way to in send an email to everyone in a particular catagory in MS Outlook 2002 [winXP] ? I understand about distribution lists, but is that is the only way to do a large scale mailing? If so, how about an auto update method to the distribution list as I add contacts into the catagory?
 
Go to your Contacts folder. Switch to the By Category view. Select all the
items in the category you want to send to. Choose Tools | Mail Merge. Follow
the prompts from there.

Alternatively, choose Actions | New Message to Contact. Cut and paste
addresses from To to Bcc field.
