Broadband Speed and Downloading Windows Updates

I have access to two different broadband speeds: fiber optic and cable.

I have been unable to download Windows Updates for my XP Professional
through Internet Explorer using the fiber optic connection. I went through
some knowledge base articles, but no success. What happens is that I click
on the "review and install" process, click on the "accept" dialog box, and
then an install dialog box appears with file download progress bars. Almost
immediately, the process terminates and I get a failure message. However,
if the Windows update icon appears in the taskbar to the right of the
chevron, I can do the updates via the fiber optic connection.

On a whim, I decided to switch my computer to the slower cable connection.
Updates via IE went fine.

Empty the Internet cache and also delete the Windows Update client
software from your computer. See "WINUP: Error Message: "Software
Update Incomplete, This Windows Update Software Did Not Update
Successfully" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319585) for details.
Then retry.
