Broadband not recognized

My XP Pro shuts the DSL connection off and sometimes
doesn't recognize the existing connection.
For example the system is on and IM is connected and
working, then, I click on Internet Explorer and it says
server cannot be found! The IM is running though and I
can use it. I've tried rebooting from scratch as well as
restart and sometimes the XP won't recognize IM or IE,
mostly it starts IM and IE won't go. After many restarts
I can usually get IE to work (like now). I've used the
wizard to set the connections properly (that's why it
works sometimes I guess) but I don't know any other place
to look for correct settings or what they should be.
Even now, if I stop using IE and let the system idle
it'll not recognize the ISP (mine is msn.com) even though
IM will still be working! What gives???
I have a Pro 2000 machine on the same DSL line (via a
hub) and it never shuts off, I can always use the
internet.
Thanks for any advisment you can supply

You might try turning off "Automatically detect settings". Tools Menu,
Internet Options, Connections Tab, LAN Settings button.
