Broadband / firewall conflicts

This seems simple but it's causing me fits. I just had a broadband
connection enables to my PC (Comcast). I run Windows XP and have
McAfee firewall and virus protection. I can't get to the Internet
unless I turn the McAfee firewall off. When it's on, the internet
connection shows as active but it's very slow (almost no sending
packets) and I can't access any sites.

What should I be doing?

On a possibly related note, I now get virtual memory problem
announcements when I have an active connection and am using Word or
Excel.

The install tech was worthless but kept changing settings to get a
connection. I'm afraid she's changed things that are now causing me
conflicts.

Any suggestions? Should I just disable McAfee? Disable WinXP
built-in firewall? Go with a router that includes firewall protection
and disable both?

You should try disabling one firewall or the other. Since you have McAfee, I
would use that and disable ICF.
