Test your firewall with Shield Up from Gibson Research
(http://grc.com/default.htm). If all is well, there is no problem with
leaving the computer online overnight.

If lightning strikes, the answer can be yes, even with surge suppressors.
Consider the distance the lightning travelled to get to your home. It
should have no difficulty travelling the last inch if the cabling is
available. IOW, the only way to ensure protection is to unplug, not just
shut down.

Even unplugging is not going to stop a close enough hit from frying a
system. You can only do so much. My systems survived a hit as close as 15
feet. Only the router was lost.

As Colin says, even that won't always stop a close-enogh
lightning strike, but it will decrease the risk to the minimum
level.

But I wanted to add an important point: don't just unplug the
power line, but also the internet connection (phone line or
cable).

Makes little or no difference if they are on or off when a nearby lightening
strike occurs.
