Windows 2000 SP4. I have recently installed a broadband (ADSL) modem that
connects through a UBS port. SInce then, especially when I have
stopped/restarted (ie. dialled) the connection, svchost.exe starts to consume
99% of the processor (and everything else slows down, of course). Does
anyone know a reason and a cure?

Sounds like a virus to me. Is your Windows 2000 fully patched and do
you use a firewall? Do an up to date virus scan on your machine to
eliminate this possibility first. Accessing the internet without a
properly configured firewall and/or a fully patched W2K is a sure
invitation for viruses and other worms.
