A relative tinkered with my settings, and now the display is dark. I've
tried using Adobe Gamma to lighten things, and that works -- but only until I
turn the computer off. When I restart, the display is dark again. What can
I do?

Re-set the brightness on the monitor itself. That was probably where
the setting was changed.

What happens when you adjust the Brightness and Contrast controls of the
front of the monitor?

That doesn't seem to do anything.

Hello,

There may be video-card settings.

Start > Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced

You will need to look around the tabs for settings related to
Brightness/Contrast or 'Color Correction'.

For nVidia cards, there is a tab with your video card name (eg - Geforce
XXXX) that has a Color Correction area where you can adjust software
brightness/contrast
