Briefcase

I was reading an XP book about Briefcase and thought it could be useful for
me. However when I tried to follow the steps the commands were not
available. When I look up Briefcase in Help is says the two computers must
be connected somehow, this was not mentioned in the XP Book.. Is this true?
In the book is says you just put Briefcase on a removable disk copy the
files to it too then put the disk in the Laptop and copy the files over and
they get synchronised, no mention of the two computers having to be
connected. Am I reading this incorrectly?

Thanks

You are reading it wrong.
If you put the briefcase on, say a floppy drive, then you can synchronize
copy files from the hard drive to the floppy. (use the right mouse button to
drag the files from the hard drive to the briefcase folder on the floppy)

Then you take the floppy to a second computer and use the files located in
the briefcase.

When you bring the floppy back to the first computer, right-click on the
briefcase and choose update all, and the changes made to the floppy files
will be transferred back to the hard drive.

You can network two computers (connect them) and make a briefcase on one of
them. Then synchronize copy files from the first computer to the second
computer. Now when you update the briefcase, it will make sure the copies
on both computers match.

I am using XP Home is Briefcase available on it?

In the instructions it says before getting started you need to create a
Briefcase. The best place to create the Briefcase is on the removable disk

(R|W CD is what I planned on using is this O.K.?)

I can't seem to find Briefcase to put it on the CD

If you have the option to "pre-format" the CD-RW I think you can put a
briefcase on it.
To make a new briefcase, you right click on the disk (or folder) where you
want the briefcase and choose "new" from the menu and then choose briefcase.
A briefcase is nothing more than a very special folder.

I use the briefcase as a backup tool.
I sync the files I want to backup on a regular basis to briefcases. Then,
after updating the briefcase, I copy the contents to a CD. This way I
don't have to hunt all over the hard drive for the files I want to back up.
By synching a folder, the update always gets all the files in the folder,
including any new files I have added to the folder.

O.K. I create a briefcase within the folder I have the files in on my
desktop which I wish to synchronize and move over to the Laptop, then copy
the files into the Briefcase. But when I try to either copy the files or
the Briefcase of drag and drop into the D: drive which is where my CD is the
message says D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function. By the way I
changed over to a new unused plain CD-R, not rewritable in case that was the
problem.

I will try and work it out from the MS link about Briefcase, I must just be
doing something very stupid!!

Thanks
