briefacse cant update because of 'readonly'

I have just set up briefcase as per the help & support
instructions.
when i choose 'update all' on my laptop i get the
message 'some of the files were read only. they were not
updated'
I have checked the ONE File in my briefacse. By right
clicking then properties. the read only box is unticked.
I have then checked the original file on my desktop pc by
right click , properties and this also has the read only
file unticked.
Is there something else that is making it read only ?
Something else i need to untick??
desktop pc xp home, laptop pc xp pro wireless network
through netgear card
all help greatly appreciated

Is it possible the file is being protected by the program that created it?
For example, Office has several options on how saved files should be
handled when accessed via a network.
