Hi all,

Brand new Lexmark E232 won't work. Drivers install, printer shows up,
but no printing. Ready light is on, bnut no printing.

WinXP Pro SP2, latest Lexmark drivers

Any ideas

I know this sounds stupid, but make sure you got all the packing
tape/foam blocks etc out...
Does windows give any errors?

Checked & rechecked the packing. When plugged in via USB is comes up
with an error about not recognising the USB device and something along
the lines of it has a problem & wasn't recognised properly.

Driver install (USB & Parallel) went without any errors.

When connected as a Parallel device it gives no errors until printing
when it shows in the print queue, but eventually shows as a printing
error. It does the same when connected as a USB printer if you try to
print.

I give up, guess it's faulty. According to their web site if you hold
the 'on' button it should print a menu page or something like that,
but it never makes a sound.

Thanks anyway Dave

Peter

I've had problems with Windows drivers where they really never
install... WHen you plug the printer in via USB, do you get the
windows found new hardware wizard? if so, when it asks for the
install, instead of "install automatically" select manual install and
point it at the driver CD/folder with the drivers... that usually
works.
Also, usually the self test is holding the paper feed button (or the
menu button, or the online button... varies by printer) down while you
turn it on.

In some cases the device has to be connected and switched on
before you install the drivers (so that the install can interrogate
the device, to identify the model, build, eprom version, and
other stuff), but this isn't always the case, the manual should
have instructions regarding installing the drivers. It may also
involve a restart to read any changes that start at bootup.

The test page may be in the software, not in the printer, does
it say it will print the menu page when it is stand alone and
not connected to a PC?

Some printers are built for a world wide market, at the first
install info gets written to the printers eprom (the character
set comes to mind). Characters are a limited range of numbers,
what language these get printed as depends on the printer. So
maybe you have to carefully follow the mfrs instructions when
you install the drivers. I always install things with a good
uninstaller, so you can roll back the install, and try again,
otherwise you can get stuck with windows thinking, incorrectly,
that it already has the best drivers, and worse refusing to let
you change anything or reinstall them.
If it's an add on USB2 card this may be your problem.
My USB wireless network dongle, and external 250GB USB
drive, don't like the card, but my camera is quite happy, as are
other devices like Lexar USB jump drive. It's a bit
unpredictable.

lexmark ink dispensers are not worth bothering with. epson, canon and
hp are the printers of choice. they all will provide good results with
factory recommended ink.
