My computer is running an Athlon XP 2600+, 1GB RAM and Radeon 9800 Pro and
on some games at 1280x1024 resolution, the frame rate drops to 10-20. Does
that mean I need to upgrade my CPU or other system components?

Thanks.

Xp 2600 is a 266mhz bus so pron pc2100 ram as well ?

Well trying running them at 1024 by 768 that can't be soooo bad can it
?

Would be great if you said what your mobo was, RAM type ect we can't
realy help unless you giove more info ?

The bottleneck will be dependant on the game, you have a fairly balanced
system, so nothing is glaringly obvious.

What speed is the RAM?

My full system specs:

Athlon XP 2600+ 333MHz BUS (Barton)
1 GB DDR SDRAM PC3200 200MHz Dual Channel feature (2x512MB) on the nForce2
mobo
Radeon 9800 PRO 128MB at 8x latest drivers

Was playing UT2004 on onslaught ON-Torlan and 16 players got bad frames
rates. I opened my case and cleaned my CPU heatsink (was clogged up with
dust!) and now it's slightly better 45-60 FPS.

I think the CPU was overheating a bit at 52C (ambient at 32C). Now max temps
at 46C and idle temps 36C! (I also ran the fan up a bit too)

This shows that it doesn't take the system to crash or burn out before you
realise your system is overheating.

Cleaning the dust made you go from 10-20fps to 45-60fps? Hmm, I don't think
so.

The CPU is rated to 85°C. (although I wouldn't recommend running it at that
temperature)

I think you must have a very strange set of circumstances to be getting slow
FPS from "overheating", and not have the system crash.

You have no idea how much dust there is... The dust became so dense (after
months of no cleaning) that it was shielding the air flow from the CPU fan.
After removing the fan all you see is a layer of dust...similar to one of
those ambush nets...but made of dust! But I'm not surprised as I live near a
high street and keep my windows open all day long. Sometimes makes me wonder
where all the £$%& I'm breathing in goes to...

Well, it shows I'm a good system builder ;)
One more thing, my CPU fan draws air from the surroundings and not from the
inside of the case.

No. What I'm saying is that for what reason are you getting a 60% reduction
in frame rate? Obviously it's not an inherant ability of dust to reduce
frame rate or processing power. if it was heat related, then the heat would
have caused what? Errors? It's not like it looks at the result and says,
nah, thats not right, do it again and silently drop that frame.

BTW, I have an A7N8X Deluxe ver 2.0 mobo. Maybe there's a hiden feature that
reduces the CPU workload when the temps get too high?

I only believe what I see ;)

I also noticed that I don't get the speedhack bug anymore on UT2004.
Definately a CPU heat issue.

Might be an idea to fit filters on your ventilation intakes, Humga.
Still means you've got to clean them out every now and then, but it's
better than having to clean out the whole machine.

Also, it will make a lot of difference to your game speed whether
you've got all the eye candy turned up or not.

If you say so. Glad the issue is solved.

Well, if you find dust in your skivvies instead of skid marks...
