Botched Comp Upgrade

Ok, so I've pretty much upgraded my computer entirely... the only original components are the CDROM and floppy drive... I've never really had any formal trying I just plugged the new pieces in where the old ones came from basically.

Anyway so I figure I can upgrade my Dads old old old computer to an old computer by putting my old parts into it. Ya I know someone is reading this probably thinking "dang that kid aint too bright" or something like that.

So he used to have a 64Mhz Celeron with 64MBs of memory on some no name old micro atx mobo that had integrated audio and video card and ran Windows 98.

I replaced it with my old Intel D845EBG2 Motherboard, a ATI Radeon 9200 Vid card, 256Megs of Ram and a brand new cheap 2ghz celeron. I also added my old LAN card and a 300W power supply.

So I figure that I do all this, plug in the HD and magic, he has a slightly less crappy pc. But no, it won't work, I plug it in and nothing happens on the screen. So I start thinking that maybe the Comp don't know whats going on because it is expecting old Mr. Micro ATX mobo piece of crap and its not there... I cant wipe this hard it has to much important stuff on it is there anyway to get this computer working?

Please I know I probably did a whole lot of things wrong and it's just a fluke that I managed to upgrade my comp without any problems so tell me what I did wrong and how if possible I can fix it.

Do you get any beeps at all from the PC? I would try removing all the components from the motherboard (including CPU) and then adding them all again. Something may not be seated properly.

Be sure to check that all power cables are connected to things like the CPU fan etc... as I have forgotten this once or twice!
 
normaly no output on the screen relates to two things

your CPU
your graphics card.

check that these are both inserted correctly. just take them both out and insert/ reseat them again. and follwoing from the Administrator's point, yes look out for beeps. try connecting the little pins on the motherboard to allow u to hear out for sounds. these can be crucial as they can direct u towards the problem.

you should at least get a BIOS on the screen or some sort of output once u get this you are sorted for life :)

A similar thing has happened to me. Can the previous BIOS settings, combined with the new parts make the computer not send a signal to the monitor?
 
Ok I will try those suggestions. But about listening to the computer beeps... I don't get any because the internal speaker isn't plugged in... I wasn't sure what pins to plug it into.

OK, its quite important that you plug that in, as it will help solve the problem :)

According to Page 20, there is one onboard the motherboard itself though! Very Strange!

trial and error it. but thats providing that there are any beeps

there mite be a chance that there are not any beeps and u mite think that u got the pins in the wrong place.

but just move the speaker pin thing around and restart it again and again. and hope for some beeps. take a note of the amount u get, normally the pc will power off no its own accord.
 
Ian is right, there is a speaker on the motherboard, so forget that for a while. Do you get power to the PC when you switch it on? You you hear the drives spinning up, the fan on the processor spins or anything like that?
 
does the motherboard have power?

You may have plugged all cables in but did you plug the main mobo power lead and the smaller reserve lead into it?
 
Yes the motherboard has power to it... at least I'm pretty sure it does... there are a few lights that light up on it and what not. Also, I am able to hear the drives spin up as well as the fans. But no beeps. I've heard intel makes two kinds of socket 478 -- and that the newer one isn't compatible with the older. Is it possible that might be the problem? I've emailed Intel to ask them as well. Ah, sometimes computers are extremely frustrating.
 
I dont think you can worry about sockets - if the processor fitted then the socket type was correct...

Try resetting the CCMOS1 jumper
 
Well I pulled out everything and then put it all back in and it works... wow what a hassle that was. Thanks for all the info from everyone.

I have the same mobo (D845EBG2 motherboard). I need to know how you connected the internal speaker, b'cos, I can't seem to find the pins for it. My problem was that I took out my DDr memory card and plugged it back in. Now, I don't know when and where I unplugged the speaker connector from and my computer does not see the monitor. I have removed the video card and resitted but it still will not come on. Somebody help, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.
 
Well apparently the motherboard has it's own speaker actually built in to the board, so you needent worry about connecting the one in your case to it.
I take it you mean that this problem happened after your removed and replaced the memory.
Did you put the RAM in exactly as it was, have you put different RAM in, or upgraded it or added extra? Which slots did you put the RAM in?
Do you get any beeps?
Are things powering up?
 
No POST on my computer

Yes, I had added a 128mb DDR mem in slot 1 but the monitor, or beep sound does not come on. I removed the new mem and placed the old the memory, yet nothing comes on. I have resitted the the video card but do not get nothing. the fans come on, there is green light on the motherboard. I have put the RAM in exactly as it was, I have put different RAM in, have not upgraded it or added extra. the slots where the RAM is SLOT 1
Idon't get any beeps
Everything is powering up fine. I feel there is no POST on the computer. Please help.

I have the same problem, I have a ASUS K8V SE DELUXE with AMD 3200 CPU. There is power to the board but that is all there are no beeps. CPU fan spins but no display at all. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
