When I see something interesting on a web site (e.g., a gif or jpg item) and
I want to save it to my computer for future use, I right click the object
and select "save picture as". The only problem with that is, by default,
the item is frequently saved as a bmp file even though when I view the
properties I see the item is not a bit map.

I can go through a rather convoluted scheme to save it in its original
format, but I was wondering whether there isn't an easier way?

The usual fix is to clear your cache.
IE-Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files (in the TIF section)

That seems to work about 98% of the time but if it doesn't, close IE
and reopen and do it again. Also it has been reported that clear
cookies helps, but ensure you save any that you need.

I had a similar problem. Check your temporary internet
files folders, they are probably clogged -up. Delete
them, that will probably solve it.

Rt click on the IE icon, one of the tabs will allow you
to delete the files, save them for x amount of time, etc.

Or you can find them on your c: somewhere.
