I am using Word 2000.
I am trying to create a table with 11 columns and 6 rows. I want the
outer border and some of the internal gridlines in the table to be
bolder than others.
I am getting into a terrible muddle doing this; I have got the basic
table done OK but I just cannot understand the options I get under
Borders and Shading.
Can anyone tell me exactly what to do?
Many thanks!

It is not terribly intuitive, but you have to select the specific cells you
want to apply a specific border to (all the ones you want a heavier bottom
border on, for example), select the desired border weight from the list box,
and then (and this is the part most people don't get), click the appropriate
border on the diagram at the right of the dialog.

Also, once you have selected a specific border weight, it becomes the
default, so you can then use the Borders palette on the Formatting or Tables
and Borders toolbar to apply top, bottom, left, right, inside, or outside
borders to selected cells, and they will be that weight until you change it
again.

You can also choose a border style and weight from the Tables and Borders
toolbar, but you do have to use the palette to apply the borders one at a
time, whereas in the dialog you can click on several borders (left, right,
and top for example) simultaneously.
