Hi all,
My pc hangs when I press the start button. I get the normal BIOS screen but
then it stops and displays the following:-

Windows could not start because the following is missing or corrupt:-

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I hit the RETURN key on the keyboard and the Windows XP carries on
installing as if nothing has happened. I do get various problems during the
time I am working on the pc and I am sure that the initial problem is causing
this.

I have tried installing windows XP by putting the 'Windows XP' disc in the
cdrom and doing a 'repair' but the problem remains and I have also
reinstalled Windows XP but htis has not stopped the problem?

Has anybody got any ideas what the problem is and how I can fix it, please!!!

Regards

Take a look at this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545

You mention having done a repair install. That will tidy up system files.
It will also make some changes to the existing registry - mostly restoring
system keys and their default values. Anything added by other programs or
changes to many user or global preference settings are left alone. If your
corruption lies within a key that is not touched by the repair install, it
will persist after the repair is complete.

If you have done clean installs (complete wipe and reinstalling everything)
and the corruption problem persists, suspect bad hardware - most likely but
not limited to bad RAM or compromised hard drive.

Sharon,
i turned my pc on today after notusing it for over a week. It wouldn't boot
and gave me the following error "ntldr not found". We don't usually turn the
pc off, so must of had a power failure. Any thoughts?

It may be related to hardware. I just installed a wireless kybd and mouse.
The PC has not been shut down since, except for this time
