It won't boot from Win '98 install disk. Can
you help?

Have you set it to "boot from CD" within the Bios?

Don't recall that the Windows 98 installation CD was bootable.

Won't boot from Windows 98 install disk? Okay, so what does "won't boot"
mean? Do you get past the POST and beep to see the summary screen of drives
and IRQ assignments? Does it start reading the bootable floppy? Does it
get to a DOS prompt? Since you mention running scandisk, you must be
getting to a DOS prompt somehow. For the DOS prompt you use, is it from
booting using the floppy or when using the hard disk?

When at a DOS prompt, are the config.sys and autoexec.bat files there? How
about the \Windows directory? Did it boot before? Are you trying to
install for the first time (so we are mistaken in thinking it was a working
Windows 98 system and it stop working)? If you are trying to install, does
the DOS bootable floppy have the necessary driver for the CD-ROM in the
config.sys file and a load of mscdex.exe in autoexec.bat so that you can
actually use the CD-ROM drive? When booting, and when the driver and mscdex
get loaded, do they actually report finding a CD-ROM drive and assigning a
drive letter, or do they fail? If they fail, you have a hardware problem
getting to the CD-ROM drive. If they succeed, can you read from the CD?
Try copying it to a temp directory on the hard drive. The bootable floppy
should have FDISK and FORMAT on it so you can make a partitioned and
formatted hard disk; if not, go to www.bootdisk.com to get an image of a
bootable floppy.

yes it is,
but the OP was far to vague for any productive comments beyond fiddling
with drive cables, bios settings and checking temp, voltage, testing
memory.

Don't know...might be able to, though.

It booted to DOS. It wouldn't start the install process from
the 98 install CD. So I booted to the floppy and ran setup
from the CD. It worked and reinstalled 98. Everything seems
to be ok. I still don't know what the problem was. I guess I'll
assume it was corrputed files.

Glad to hear you got it going. I don't recall ever booting from the
Windows 98 CD. I'll take others' word that it is bootable. I still
have my old Windows 98 CD but I also kept a bootable floppy that loads
the CD-ROM drivers so I can access the CD to run setup.exe from it.
Maybe back when I was installing Windows 98 the PCs were few that had
the option to boot from the CD-ROM drive.
