Boottime defrag

Did a boot time defrag & now Windows XP doesn't start up
anymore. Immediately after the memory check & drive
detection, the screen goes grey & the hard disk stops.
End of story. I used Executive Diskeeper (don't know the
version number because I can't get into the PC.).

Does anybody know what I can do to get around this?

Hey Calle,

It sounds like its not even getting as far as trying to boot from the hard
disk.
How many bios initialization screens do you normally get. All my system have
2, the first with the memory check and the ide channel check, and the second
which shows the speeds of the ide devices and a pci device irq table.
They then display various versions of "Hit any key to boot from CD" and if
no key is press then try to boot from hard disk
Exactly how far does yours get, do you see the boot from cd option

Hi Paul,

Yes, I can boot from diskette by simply putting it in the
drive when I start up the computer. What I see is first
the memory count, when that's done it gives the
information on the drives (master, slave etc...) and then
it looks if there's something in the disk drive. If not,
the computer moves on (and gets
stuck immediately).

Is this the information you were looking for?

Thanks,
Calle

So it boots from floppy disk ok.
Do you have the windows xp release cd, if so will it boot, and can you get
into the recovery console ok.
To get into the recovery console you respond with the single letter R at the
first prompt screen.
If you can we can try a few things.

If you dont have the windows xp cd you can download the files needed to run
the recovery console but you will need 6 floppy disks. If you need to do
this then let me know and I'll dig out the URL.

Great, So you can log into the recovery console ok. This means it must be
accessing the disk ok in order to validate the administrator password.

First off, lets run chkdsk.

Log into the recovery console with the adminstrator password.
Does it give you a choice of windows drive letters to log into or just 1?
If more than one, choose the one you normally boot.
And at the prompt type.

chkdsk /r C:

Replace C: with whatever drive letter you have logged into.

Thanks for the tip. I haven't been able to do the
ckeckdisk yet. Frist change to get back on it will be the
weekend. I'll update you by monday latest.

I'll still be here :-)

Hi -

Although Paul is giving you good advice, you can always contact the
Diskeeper Tech Support folks for more assistance on this, since it's
likely they've walked others through similar scenarios. They are at
(e-mail address removed).

I hope this helps -

Hey Calle,

It's certainly worth using Executive support if you have a valid license as
they will be aware of any known issues and fixes outside of the generic help
I can offer you.

If chkdsk doesn't fix the problem and you go this route, please come back
and update the thread with the cause and solution.

Paul

Hi Paul,

Here's the update. I ran the chkdsk - it ran for ages &
the progress bar jumped from 75% complete to 50% complete
at some stage. But everything now works absolutely fine.

Sorry it took me so long to update, but I borrowed my CD
to a friend & I only got it back this weekend.

Cheers,
Pascal
