I had a HD fail, my main C drive. I had two other HD used as file storage.
All the HDs are SATA. Bought a new HD and installed doing a clean install of
Vista (32bit) on new HD. After install get the message "bootmgr is missing"
with the ctl-alt-del option. Used the Vista install DVD to try various
repair options. It did boot off the DVD. I could not get it fixed.

Read some where that the problem could have resulted because I left the two
storage HD in the PC when I installed Vista. So I disconnected the two
storage HDs, did a new clean install of Vista to my new HD. No problems.
Connected the two storage HD back up and I now get the "bootmgr is missing"
error message again. I have used the various repair option listed by
Miscrosoft except the last method, which is the "rebuild the BCD store
manually" method, mostly because the DOS commands given are a wee bit
confusing with all the { } type brackets and no explaination if the {} are
to be used in the command and what the "description" command really is, etc.
The PC will boot from the DVD but I continue to get the bootmgr is mising
message.

Does anyone have any ideas how to get the PC to boot normally with the two
other HD installed; how to repair the bootmgr is missing issue?

Thank you for any help.

The new HD, the one on which I installed Vista, is listed as the first drive
in the BIOS boot sequence right after the optical disk drive. If the two
"storage" HD are disconnected from the MB then the new HD boots to Vista.
Re-connecting the "storage" drives results once agin in the bootmrg is
missing message on boot up.

Is your new drive set in the bios as the first or primary boot drive?

Sounds like the computer is trying to boot from one of the other drives,
and since no boot info on them, you will experience the problem you are
having.

Check Bios setting Hard Disk Boot Priority or Hard Disk Drives. Move
the boot drive to the top of the list.

The HD with the OS is the first drive after the optical drive, so it is the
first HD in the boot up sequence.

Discovered an interesting solution. I recalled I once had a problem with
another ASUS mobo that it would not read the HD when it was plugged into
SATA port 1 and would only work when I plugged it into SATA port 2, no
matter what boot sequence I used in the BIOS.

So moved the new HD "C" drive to SATA port/slot 2 and one of my other
storage drives to SATA port/slot 1. On boot it started right up and Vista
see all the storage drives. System seems to be running good. Go figure

Thank you for all the help I received.
