I have 2 installation sof windows 2000 on my machine. the
original was a bad installation that caused boot
problems. in order to get my mchine back up and running
quickly (and retreave data on other partiitions) i re-
intalled windows. when i boot there are 2 versions. the
first is the bad one. if i don't indicate the second one
in time (30 secs)then it tries to load bad version. is
there anyway i can get rid of this bad one so that there
is only 1 windows to boot?

Edit boot.ini. You'll see refs to two versions of W2K, one of which is the
default. Make the other one the default, and delete refs to the bad one if
you don't want to see both show up on the boot screen.

BTW, if you'd made a second partition on your HD (it would be D:), and stored
all your data there, you could have simply deleted the bad W2K, and installed
a good one in C: without losing data. Many people will tell you you don't
need to make several partitions, but I disagree. It saves a lot of hassle
when (not if, unfortunately) you have reinstall or repair your W2k
installation, or when you upgrade to a new, larger HD.

Same or separate partitions?

Now would be an excellent time to review your backup
strategy. You were able to retrieve your data this time,
without loss, but you may not be so lucky next time . . .
