A couple months ago, when retrieving e-mail using outlook
express, my machine rebooted and I got the blue screen of
death, saying that a device driver(in this case the modem
driver) could not be loaded. I've tried to reboot many
times, using safe mode, last known configuration, and the
Windows 2000 installation disk. I got into my desktop only
a couple of times. I almost always get a 'could not load
the device driver' message on the BSOD, where the device
driver listed varies between boots. The file system is
NTFS.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

My brother got a similar message regarding the cdrom and
he bought a new one and it now runs fine. He had to
install win 2000 again. Try buying a new modem.

Boot into Safe Mode, then delete the modem driver file.
If this does not work, then try this:
- Boot with your Win2000 CD
- Select "Repair" when prompted
- Select "Command Console" when prompted
- Delete the misbehaving driver file from the Command Console
