On booting up my PC, i get the option of loading either
Windows XP or Windows XP!!
Obviously i want to load windows XP, but why do it give
me the choice? One of the links is dead and doesnt lead
anywere, but it still delays start up by 30 seconds!!

Can anyone please help me delete the "dead" XP

Many thanks in advance, Richard

Go to Start > Run and type in: MSCONFIG , and hit enter,
Click the BOOT.INI tab.
Next, click "Check All Boot Paths".
This procedure should correct your BOOT.INI file.

You need to edit boot.ini in C:\ and remove the redundant line.

It's a read-only, hidden, system file

Make sure you delete the correct line!! They appear in the file in the
same order as they do on screen.

This is what it looks like (the last line may be wrapped):

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

Is the default one (i.e. the one highlighted when the screen appears)
the correct one? If so, then the valid entry in the '[operating
systems]' section is the one that matches the 'default=' line in the
'[boot loader]' section.

HTH
