booting up has gotten progressively slower

I have Windows XP and the time it takes to boot up
has gotten progressively longer: now exceeds 6 minutes.
What is going on?

Also, signing off from internet access takes several
attempts. Sign-off from AOL happens quickly but the
buttons keep popping up asking me if I want to Turn off
the computer?
Ideas?

Not sure but I would start with a virus scan if you

haven't already done so. Symantec has one oneline if you
don't have a antivirus program.
