hello,
How can one boot to DOS while running, or at least have installed, windows
ME. I can reboot (windows) in Safe Mode or from other drives, but don't
know how to get to DOS like in 98 or NT. I can't google an answer on this
one. Could I reboot from a 98 cd registered to me and go from there? How
would this effect ME when I went back to booting windows from the hd?

I'm actually thinking of reformatting and reinstalling my 98 and updating
the works. No heckling from the anti-windows folks, please. I like some
versions a lot.

And yes, some of this deals with virii, so it's on topic.

Thanks for past & future help,

CF

Take a look at Chris Quirke's page:

http://users.iafrica.com/c/cq/cquirke/me-dos.htm

Of the methods he outlines, I've been using #1, the mfd4life hack on
Win ME without problems.

You did make a system boot disk I hope :) BTW, there are some other
very interesting things that can be done. You can boot up ME (and
other OS) into a Windows command-line-mode-only. You can create a boot
disk that boots directly into Windows. All kinds of nifty tricks :)

You have three options:

1. Get the MAKERESQ utility from http://invircible.com/iv_tools.php#MakeRESQ
MakeResQ will prepare a DOS boot floppy customized for YOUR computer, simply by
running the utility from Windows.

2. Get the FreeDOS boot floppy from http://invircible.com/iv_tools.php#FreeDOS
Boot of the floppy made with the utility and you should be able to access your
drive(s) and files.

3. Get the ToggleMode utility from www.invircible.com/item/80 The utility will
let you start ANY Win32 platform in a safe WITH COMMAND PROMPT mode, including
ME.

The last option is the recommended one as it has many advantages. Among them is
the mounting of all drives, including CD-ROM (which is what you want), and is
ideal for conducting anti-virus work with tools designed to work under Windows,
without letting malware to interfere with the cleaning.

Read the instructions on the respective page before proceeding.
