Vista RC1 hung on the last phase of the intall for 8 hours. I had to reboot
the computer, and now when Vista starts, i see an X: drive command prompt at
the path
X:\$windows.~bt/windows\system32\cmd.exe.

What do I do now?

Did you attempt a clean install, or an upgrade?? If you tried a clean
install, you could always just try again.

I have encountered the same problem. How do I wipe the harddrive clean?

Just a note regarding the "X" drive designation. Vista is installed by Win
PE (Windows pre-environment OS) - it is composed of a subset of Vista -
Vista is in a WIM - image format (actually "install.wim" on the DVD. The
DVD initially loads Win PE and assigns it the drive letter "X" - usually
transparent and for some reason you are ending with the PE installation. PE
can also be used for recovery (used by Vista for recovery) - problem is
being familiar with the command structure.
