Booting Problems

I recently installed a graphics card. Ever since then, when I try to boot the computer it goes to a black screen with cursor and will not initiate windows. Yet, if I put the OS CD in the drive and boot up the computer, and do not "press any key to start from CD" as indicated windows starts without any problems. I've tried doing a repair via the Windows setup twice, and nothing fixes the problem

Any suggestions?

It seems that the video card works if it will boot to the cd. Check in the
bios if the onboard video (if you have one) is turned off. And the bios
should be set to boot to the hard drive first , boot 0. Jym

Forgive me, I'm a newbie...I do have onboard video (Intel Extreme Graphics). Not really sure how you set the BIOS though. Please help (and thanks for your help!)

Try this

Google search 'video card xp incompatibility'

see if any of the results are yours.

When you first start the computer you are given a message if you want to
enter the bios. Press and hold the key that is given you (usually delete).
Browse from page to page to find the items that I have given you to check.
Instruction for navigating the bios are at the bottom of the bios screen.
Usually the plus / minus keys change the settings. Following directions to
implement the settings that you have changed. Jym

After installing a graphics card, the system hangs with a blank screen on
bootup.

If WinXP CD is in the drive, followed by a Windows setup routine ( "pressing
any key to start from CD" ) -- a repair install of WinXP using the CD -- the
system hangs with a blank screen.

If WinXP CD is in the drive, *not* followed by a Windows setup routine ( no
"pressing any key to start from CD" ) -- a jobless CD lying on the tray --
the machine boots normally to desktop.

Are you sure about that? This is very odd!
