Is there away to change the drive letter of the boot
volume in XP pro have a system here with 2 hdd the
primary drive was set to f:\ and the secondary to c:\
when I try to change the letter in disk manager it will
not allow me to do so do you know of a way short of
reloading

there is a way, but you are better of leaving it or
redoing the install from scratch.

If you change the key in the registry for the boot drive,
all installed apps will still be pointing to the F:
drive. Its a nightmare. If it is a cosmetic reason for
changing it to c: , live with it.

If it is crucial, remove the secondary drive and
reinstall windows on top of itself, then reinstall all
your apps on top of thier previous installs. Data and
settings should be preserved in apps, but all C:
references should be updated.

Thanks for the info
